The family of late legendary Nollywood actor, Chief Kanran, has finally spoken out to clear the air on the circumstances that surrounded his shocking and painful death. In their statement, they addressed the growing wave of speculations, insisting that contrary to public assumptions, the actor was not bedridden or battling any major illness before his sudden demise.
Chief Kanran, who passed away tragically just a few days before his 70th birthday celebration and the highly anticipated commemoration of his 55th anniversary on stage, was said to have collapsed unexpectedly inside his home during the early hours of the morning. His sudden death has thrown the Nigerian movie industry and his teeming fans into a state of deep grief and disbelief.

In an exclusive phone interview with Alore TV, his niece confirmed the heartbreaking incident, clarifying reports that suggested the actor had been seriously ill. According to her, he was very much in good spirits the night before he died, and even though he had a history of high blood pressure, he was not sick at all prior to his passing.
“Chief Kanran was not sick at all before he died, even though he had high BP. In fact, he and his elder brother were on the phone for hours the night before the incident. He was strong and lively when they spoke,” she explained during the emotional interview.
Narrating further, she disclosed that the veteran thespian was all alone at home when the incident happened. While attempting to use the bathroom, he suddenly slumped and fell. Unfortunately, since no one was around at the time to offer immediate assistance, he tragically passed away in that vulnerable state.
The grieving niece used the opportunity to advise Nollywood practitioners, actors, and other stakeholders in the entertainment industry to pay more attention to their health, wellbeing, and companionship. She emphasized that the profession often comes with overwhelming stress, long hours of work, and emotional strain, which makes rest, medical care, and strong social support systems absolutely necessary.
Chief Kanran, a highly revered figure in the Yoruba film industry, built a career that spanned over five decades, leaving behind an indelible mark in the Nigerian entertainment landscape. Known for his iconic roles, commanding stage presence, and cultural influence, he was loved and celebrated across generations of movie lovers.
According to the family, burial arrangements have been scheduled for September, where colleagues, fans, and loved ones will come together to pay their last respects to a man who dedicated his life to the growth of theatre and cinema in Nigeria. His death remains a monumental loss to the Yoruba movie industry and Nollywood at large, as he will be remembered not only as an actor but as a cultural icon whose works will continue to inspire for many years to come.
