Senate President Godswill Akpabio has returned to Nigeria after spending some days in London, where he took time off for rest, relaxation, and personal engagements. His arrival puts to rest days of intense speculation and rumours circulating across social media platforms that suggested he was critically ill and undergoing medical treatment abroad.
The Senate President touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday around 4:00 am. He was warmly received at the presidential wing by a delegation of senators, top aides, loyal supporters, and political associates, who turned out in large numbers to welcome him back home.

Addressing newsmen shortly after his arrival, Akpabio strongly refuted the widespread rumours about his health, describing them as “pure imagination” fueled by misinformation. He clarified that his brief stay in London was not for any medical emergency but rather a short vacation meant to refresh after his recent international engagements.
“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with me. I’m as fit as a fiddle. People should stop spreading false stories. I only stopped over in London for a short vacation and some personal rest after official duties,” the 62-year-old lawmaker firmly stated, dismissing claims of hospitalisation as baseless.
Before traveling to London, Akpabio had represented Nigeria at the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31, where he participated in high-level discussions on strengthening parliamentary democracy and improving synergy among arms of government worldwide.
According to him, the Nigerian delegation played an active role in pushing for stronger democratic governance and accountability on the international stage. He expressed optimism that such engagements would further enhance Nigeria’s global standing and contribute to improving legislative processes back home.
Looking ahead, Akpabio reassured Nigerians that the National Assembly, under his leadership, would resume with renewed vigour and commitment after the recess. “We promise robust legislative engagements when the Senate reconvenes. Nigerians should expect more action and impactful debates that will address key issues affecting our country,” he pledged.
Earlier, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel, had also moved to quash the reports about Akpabio’s alleged illness and hospitalisation. Daniel stressed that the Senate President was in good health and that the viral claims were mere fabrications spread by detractors.
Supporters at the airport also expressed joy and relief, noting that his safe return was proof that the health scare was unfounded. Many described the Senate President as looking “strong, cheerful, and energetic.”
