In an official statement released on August 22, 2025, the agency revealed that the Marketing Authorisation Holder and Manufacturer, Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, had stopped production of Cowbell “Our Milk” as far back as September 2023. The company had since replaced it with a new variant, Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness”, which has been the only authorised version in the Nigerian market since then.

Despite the discontinuation, counterfeiters have continued to produce fake sachets that closely mimic the old “Our Milk” packaging. These counterfeit products are not authorised by NAFDAC and are not manufactured by Promasidor, making them unsafe and illegal. According to the agency, the fake sachets deceptively carry the brand name, the NAFDAC registration number, and packaging designs to make them appear genuine to unsuspecting buyers.

NAFDAC cautioned that consuming these counterfeit milk products could expose Nigerians to serious health risks. Such dangers include the possibility of toxic chemical contamination, the use of unapproved additives, harmful adulterants, and diluted nutritional content. The agency explained that because these fake products do not meet safety or nutritional standards, they pose life-threatening risks to the public.

Particularly vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the elderly face heightened risks. Potential health effects may range from foodborne illnesses, digestive complications, allergic reactions, and nutrient deficiencies to organ damage. In extreme cases, consumption of counterfeit milk could even result in death.

Details of the counterfeit product identified by NAFDAC include:

Product Name: Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachet
Purported Manufacturer: Promasidor Nigeria Ltd
Production Date: 04/2025
Expiry Date: 12/2028

NAFDAC urged members of the public, especially healthcare professionals, distributors, retailers, and consumers, to remain vigilant and report any suspected sales or distribution of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” or other substandard food products. Reports can be made at the nearest NAFDAC office, through the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or by sending an email to [email protected]. The agency reassured Nigerians that it is intensifying surveillance and enforcement actions to safeguard public health.
