A young lady has sparked conversations online after she stumbled upon a collection of handwritten love letters that her mother wrote to her father during their courtship in the 1990s. The discovery, which she shared in a TikTok video, has left many social media users nostalgic while also amused at the personal requests contained in the letters.
According to the daughter, the letters were written over a span of several years, including 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997. Each one carried heartfelt expressions of affection but also contained specific requests that reflected the simplicity and financial struggles of that time. Among the requests were pleas for ₦900, money to buy body cream, and even onions for household use. The revelation has generated both laughter and sympathy as people reflected on the realities of young love in the past.
Sharing the letters under her TikTok handle, @chigirl430, she displayed more than ten different notes written by her mother, explaining that they were addressed to the man who later became her husband and father to her. As she read them out, she pointed to the years written on each letter, saying on camera: “This one is 1997, this one is 1994, 1993, this one 1995, 1992.”
One of the letters she highlighted began with a romantic tone: “Dearest husband, it is a pleasure for me to…” before revealing that her mother was not feeling well and needed ₦900 at the time. However, according to the daughter, her father was only able to send ₦200 in response, which reflected the financial situation then.
In another letter, her mother complained about the lack of essentials, writing that her cream had finished and she had no onions at home, therefore requesting her father to send some money. A 1997 letter also included an emotional plea where she wrote: “Please try to reply me for me to cool my mind,” showing her longing for reassurance and communication in the relationship.
The heartwarming yet humorous discovery quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of comments from viewers who found the exchange both relatable and funny. Many remarked that “billing,” or asking for money, was not new, but had simply taken different forms over the years. Others noted the innocence and genuine affection behind the words, pointing out that such handwritten letters carried more depth than today’s digital messages.
